MSO Director Report

MSO 2009 Annual Session Top 10
     1.  2010 SAO - MSO Annual Session and 2010 MSO Shepard Award Presentation - MSO members will be receiving registration materials by mail late spring directly from the Southern Association of Orthodontists office for the combined Annual Session to be held September 22 - 26 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Dr. Frank Whipps of Centralia, Illinois will receive the 2010 MSO Shepard Award at the 2010 MSO/SAO Annual Session.  For additional information, go to www.saortho.org.

     2.  MSO Financial Position - The MSO is in a solid financial position with the Board's conservative investment policy.  MSO continued at the Ad Interim to be fiscally responsible in evaluating both income and expense opportunities on the members' behalf.  MSO experienced a net income in 2009 with a positive gain on the 2009 MSO Annual Session, as well as the association's portfolio return.

     3.  Bylaws Change:  Vice President Position Realignment - The Board voted to propose a bylaws change to the members this fall that would remove the vice president position.  If passed, this would begin in 2012 in order to maintain the currently-identified future leadership succession that is already in process on long-term plans for their assigned meeting.  The Board voted to transfer the vice presidents' current duties to chair the Annual Sessions committee to the president-elect.  This would not only shorten the length of service on the MSO Board, but it would also incur a money savings for MSO while maintaining efficiency and balance.

     4.  Bylaws Change:  $15 Dues Increase - The MSO Board voted to submit a proposed MSO dues increase of $15 to the membership as has been done historically in this time period to keep up with the cost-of-living.  The dues increase if passed at the fall MSO business meeting would not take effect until the AAO's summer 2011 billing cycle.

     5.  MSO Resolution to AAO 2010 House of Delegates - MSO is currently planning to submit one resolution to this year's AAO House.  It would request that the AAO President's Reception held during the AAO Annual Session be funded entirely from the AAO Annual Session budget beginning in 2012 versus the current cap paid by AAO with remaining payment being the responsibility of the constituent.  Dr. Jackie Miller of Missouri serves as the MSO delegation chair and can be reached at smyldr@yahoo.com or 636-239-4004.  Dr. Ross Crist serves as MSO delegation vice chair and can be reached at ross@cristorthodontics.com or 605-361-0016.

     6.  Taskforce Appointed and Strategic Plan Reviewed  - MSO appointed a taskforce to review options for future board dialogue and report filing.  The Board currently uses the AAO Sharepoint system.  The board also had an in-depth review in order to update the existing MSO Strategic Plan.

     7.  AAO Info to Components on 2010 Dues and Radio Interview Opportunities - The AAO recently mailed the annual dues billing form to the component leader currently receiving the component dues checks for response, as well as a letter to the member who will be the component president in May about scheduling a radio interview on-site at the AAO Annual Session in DC.  Contact Sherry Nappier regarding the membership dues billing and Pam Paladin regarding the radio interviews at the AAO office at 1-800-424-2841 if further questions.

     8.  Component Leadership Attendance in 2011 at AAO Leadership Conference in California and AAO Professional Advocacy Conference in DC - AAO will be sending component leaders information later this fall requesting that each component and constituent (MSO) send a representative to the every-other-year AAO Leadership Conference.  Components will be responsible for reimbursing their individual representative's transportation expenses while AAO will pay the hotel and meals for the Leadership Conference portion of the meeting.  The one-day program will be held February 24, 2011 in San Diego, California in conjunction with the AAO Mid-Winter meeting.  AAO will also again be inviting members to participate in their hosted Professional Advocacy Conference January 24 - 26, 2011 in DC.  If you would like to participate in this DC conference, contact MSO's COGA representative Dr. Mark Dake at mark@osoortho.com or 417-256-5100 for more information.

     9.  Incoming New MSO Leaders - MSO is honored to have Dr. Joyce Simmons of Nebraska and Dr. Jane Bentz of Wisconsin scheduled to join the MSO Board at the end of the upcoming MSO Annual Session in September.  MSO announces that Dr. Deb Lien of Minnesota has committed to move-up the chairs in the future to be MSO's 2015 President.

     10.  Component Affiliation Agreement Update - While some components have submitted all their materials, others continue to work on finalizing their AAO/constituent agreement requirements.  AAO has requested this process to formalize in writing a relationship that already exists while also protecting everyone in the AAO family chain, just as one would incorporate their own practice.  If there are questions, the AAO has been supportive of conference calls or answering quesitons individually regarding this documentation which requires a copy of the current bylaws and articles of incorporation.  Once all documents have been received by a component, the MSO office will submit all documents together to the AAO for review.
